Classes will be held in Bozeman, MT on Manley Road, off of Griffin, just west of the East Gallatin Recreation Center. The cost of the Weekend Packing Seminar© is $110 per person and is limited to 8 people.

FRIDAY, – 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Topics include:
Why go into the back country? – Ethics of outdoor land use. – Setting up a camp: What to bring? – Camp organization – Toilet facilities – Food storage and preparation – Cleaning up camp after yourself – Low impact camping. Classroom: (1 hour)
Hands On: (2 hours) – How to be safe around the stock – Fitting saddles, pack and riding to your stock – What animal to use? Horses vs. Mules.
SATURDAY, – 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Topics include:
Keeping stock in the Backcountry I: Low impact stock retention. – Picketing – Hobbling – High Lines – Low Lines – Tying to trees – Electric fences (These techniques will be practiced throughout the weekend).
Hands On: (2 hours) – Packing the Decker: – How to tie manties in two versions – Basket Sling – Crow’s Foot
LUNCH BREAK ~ 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Bring your own lunch.
SATURDAY, – 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Topics include:
Keeping stock in the Backcountry II: Amount of stock to take – Feeding and grazing stock – Spreading manure – Keeping a low impact horse camp – Classroom: (1 hour)
Hands On: (2 hours) Packing the Sawbuck – Different kinds of Panyards – Box Hitch – Arizona Hitch – Diamond Hitch
Classroom: (1 hour) – Food safety – How to deal with bears – What to do in case of an emergency – What to do when all else fails.
We’ll put the skills we learned in the Level I class to practice on this overnight trip into Yellowstone’s Northwest Corner. We provide everything, you just show up with a change of clothes, your toothbrush, and if you prefer, your own riding helmet.
